Situated along the South Branch of the Raritan River, the scenic town of Clinton measures just 1.4 square miles. It is bordered by the larger Clinton Township as well as Franklin and Union Townships.

Downtown Clinton's charming Victorian-era village attracts visitors and locals with its historic shopping area, tree-lined streets and scenic river and waterfall views. The antique truss bridge constructed in 1870 crosses the Raritan River and overlooks a 200-foot wide waterfall separating two old grist mills: Clinton's landmark Red Mill, home of the Hunterdon Historical Museum, and the Stone Mill, which houses the Hunterdon Museum of Art. This inspirational backdrop has made the borough a destination for art, music and film festivals.

Community Life

Clinton's quaint shopping district is known for its eclectic dining and retail options. Boutiques, coffee houses, tea rooms, restaurants, an ice cream parlor, art galleries, museums and a candy shop are among the offerings. Special events in the community have included a Spring Pansy Festival, Midsummer's Night Ball, Summer Shakespeare festival, Christmas Parade, Dickens' Days in November and a town picnic in Hunts Mill Park. The Come Together Friday Night Music Festival features free curbside performances by multiple artists throughout the summer. At the end of October, the Red Mill is transformed into a haunted house, attracting visitors from all over the East Coast.

Education

The Clinton-Glen Gardner School District is based in Clinton and also serves students from Glen Gardner Borough in Pre-K through grade 8 at Clinton Public School located at 10 School Street. Built in 1923, the brick building has had multiple additions through the years. According to their website, "The Clinton-Glen Gardner School District is a community who values traditions. Our mission is to nurture and cultivate each child to be a compassionate, curious, and creative thinker, entrusted and empowered to build and lead the future."

Clinton students in grades 9-12 attend North Hunterdon High School in Annandale, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. It is part of the North Hunterdon-Voorhees Regional High School District. North Hunterdon High School also serves students from Clinton Township, Bethlehem Township, Franklin Township, Lebanon Borough and Union Township.

Transportation

The town of Clinton is easily accessed from Route 31, which is a few miles from Interstate 78 for travel to New York City or Pennsylvania. Routes 173 and 513 traverse through the town's borders.

Trans-Bridge Lines offers bus service to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan as well as New York City-area airports at a Park and Ride stop on Route 31. Locally, there is a NJ Transit railroad station for the Raritan Valley Line in the Annandale section of Clinton Township for train service to Newark, Hoboken or Penn Station in Manhattan.

The Red Mill Museum Village at 56 Main Street contains the circa 1810 Red Mill, the Mulligan Quarry and its outbuildings, the Bunker Hill Schoolhouse and a replica log cabin. All present permanent exhibits and are open to visitors. The Mill, the outbuildings and the grounds are on the State and National Register of Historic Places. Since early times, the mill and the adjoining Mulligan Quarry have produced building materials, textiles, baskets, and food. Starting in 1963, the museum used its National Historic Site status to tell of the region's rural heritage. Special exhibits, concerts, Civil and Revolutionary War re-enactments and Living History Days are frequently on the calendar. Educational Tours and Programs are available for adults and students.

The Clinton Book Shop at 12 East Main Street is one of the state's leading independent book shops and is located in the historic shopping district. In business since 1969, the Clinton Book Shop hosts many community-oriented events throughout the year including author appearances with book signings and sidewalk sales.

The familiar red building can be found everywhere, including official New Jersey tourism posters, roadmaps and postcards.
